The project included constructing approximately 27km of two-lane, dual lane carriageways, five intersections and associated ramps, 5 main carriageway twin bridges including twin bridges over the main northern railway plus 8 transverse bridges over the main highway including twin bridges at Branxton and Kurri Kurri interchanges. The Expressway will significantly reduce congestion between Newcastle and Branxton and provides a major new arterial route from Newcastle to the upper Hunter.
The works were carried out in areas subject to mine subsidence and acid sulphate soils. In addition, works were conducted in areas with significant tracts of native vegetation that provided habitat for endangered flora and fauna. Works took place within stringent clearing limits.
Lis-Con supplied formwork, reinforcement and concrete works. Work was completed on drainage structures including culverts, wing walls and head walls. A large workforce worked on the main bridge structures as simultaneous crews completed concrete paving works.
